- Story Text: Harrison Ford plays the straight-laced but funny news anchor in a comedic take on breakfast television programmes with fellow veteran Diane Keaton as his co-anchor and Rachel McAdams as a young, ambitious producer in "Morning Glory".
Ford, McAdams, and Patrick Wilson, who plays McAdams love interest in the film, joined director Roger Mitchell in London for the movie's UK premiere on Tuesday (January 11).
Mitchell, who took on fame and celebrity in "Notting Hill" now turns his head at the competitive world of breakfast news shows, whose viewing demographic demand a perfect balance of being informed and being entertained.
The film tells the story of legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Ford) who is hired by enthusiastic young TV producer Becky Fuller (McAdams) to bring some life back into national news show "Daybreak". Unfortunately Pomeroy is a difficult colleague, refusing to cover regular morning television stories such as celebrity gossip, weather and fashion. On top of this, he doesn't get along well with co-host Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), who is a former beauty queen and longtime show host.
While the pair continuously clash on air, off air Becky develops a relationship with fellow producer Adam Bennett (Patrick Wilson). As the story continues, Becky is pressured to do everything to save her job, relationship and even the show from collapsing.
The role is an unusual one for Ford, who's most famous for his action hero roles like Indiana Jones or Han Solo in the "Star Wars" franchise. But he says beneath the straight-laced characters he takes on, he likes the occasional comedic parts.
"I like comedy, from time to time when I've found something I've really felt was good, I've been happy to do comedy, it's fun to do," he told Reuters Television on the red carpet.
When asked whether he thought he was a funny person, Ford, without breaking a smile and looking squarely at reporters said: "I'm hilarious. Hilarious."
McAdams admitted to being star struck when working with Ford.
"I do when I'm working with people like that yeah definitely. I grew up loving his work and everything he did really so I definitely had the butterflies when I met him so he put me at ease. And I never had to control to anchors like that so that was fun, yeah," he said.
Wilson who plays the stable boyfriend amongst McAdams' madness, says takes it as a compliment when fans don't realise it's him playing in different roles.
"You always want to be able to disappear into the character a little even if it's a subtle change. I just try to keep it as different as possible. I love it, thankfully. It would be terrible if it was the other way around, if they can't shake you," said the actor who's starred as a philandering husband in "Little Children" opposite Kate Winslet and an action hero in "Watchmen".
Director Mitchell says the line between hard news and entertainment news has been skewed by the proliferation of round-the-clock news channels.
"It's not my taste (to watch entertainment news) but I'm not in a position to say you must watch serious news. It's not my taste. There are now so many platforms for obtaining news. Everything is being reinvented. There are so many ways you can go on the net or go on the net as you know. The news is now 24 hours and I think that's been disruptive for politicians and police, they have to feed information to this monster every few minutes."
Singer Peter Andre was seen signing autographs at the premiere as his ex-wife the model Katie Price is set to announce a split from her husband Alex Reid. The personal lives of Andre and Price have been a near daily fixture of British tabloids since their divorce in 2009. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
