- Story Text: Leicester Square was transformed into a snow covered winter land straight out of the movies on Tuesday (December 05), for the UK premiere of the romantic comedy 'The Holiday'.
Snow frosted trees and a white -, instead of red - carpet were lined with screaming fans waiting to see three of the film's popular stars.
Certainly one of those stars was impressed with the premiere set.
"I love the Premieres in London," actress Cameron Diaz told Reuters Television. "Leicester Square is sort of our equivalent to Hollywood Boulevard, when we get to shut down Hollywood Boulevard and really make a big stink about the film, y'know, so it's great to be here for this film especially."
'The Holiday' stars Cameron Diaz as Amanda and Kate Winslet playing Iris - a couple of strangers who arrange a two week house swap for the holidays to take a break from their unlucky-in-love lives. While romance is the last thing either woman is looking for, they find it when Amanda meets Iris' brother, played by Jude Law, and Iris meets a friend of Amanda's played by Jack Black, who was absent from Tuesday's premiere.
Kate Winslet said the chance to play in a 'feel good' romantic comedy made a nice break from some of the more intense, independent dramas she has played in this year. But she said the role was not necessarily easy just because she was playing in a holiday comedy.
"It was so wonderful. It was really nice to walk away from the experience with a genuine spring in my step," Winslet said. "There's a lot of other things I've done where I've walked away feeling as though I should be locked up in an asylum and be given a month to recover. So that was really really nice, but at the same time it did have its own sense of challenges, you know I mean, it was a romantic comedy therefore I'm not used to that, I had to learn about that. And also playing a contemporary Brit, you know I've never played that before."
Jude Law, who has done his share of serious dramas this year, with 'All The Kings Men' (which also starred Kate Winslet) and 'Breaking and Entering,' said he too relished the chance to do a lighter romantic role.
"You know it's what makes the job fun to be really honest and I've always been a massive fan of the romantic comedies of Cary Grant and Hepburn and of the late 40's and the 50's and always wanted to have a go at one, but wanted to be in the right hands - and Nancy Meyers is incredibly adept at pulling these off - and with the right cast - and it's a wonderful cast - so I was really lucky."
