- Story Text: Anthony Hopkins and the stars of "The Rite" hit the red carpet for the film's premiere at the famous Gramaun's Chinese Theater Wednesday (January 26). It was the first Hollywood premiere for Irishman Colin O'Donoghue who plays Michael Kovak.
The film focuses on Michael Kovak and his experience with Father Lucas, played by Anthony Hopkins. Father Lucas is a priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms while Michael Kovak has doubts that exorcisms are real. It is this dichotomy of doubt and beliefs that is the main focus of the story.
The story also depicts the experience of a real life exorcist.
The film is inspired by the book "The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist" written by Matt Baglio. Mr. Baglio followed Father Gary Thomas when Thomas enrolled in a Vatican exorcism course in 2005. It is Father Thomas' own journey from doubter to believer during his interactions with an experienced exorcist that the producers felt would make a fascinating film on exorcism.
Anthony Hopkins agreed.
"It's about faith. It's about the devil, about God, and everything," said Mr. Hopkins, adding, "it's based on sort of a real story, you know. Father Gary Thomas and he has exorcised people. He's a priest. And he was on set with us most everyday really. And I asked him 'Do you believe in the devil?' he said, 'Yes."
In the film Alice Braga plays Angeline, a journalist in Rome seeking the truth about exorcisms. She said it is the question of faith that attracted her to the film.
"I think 'The Rite' is about question of faith more than anything else. I think it's a psychological drama that discusses idea of beliefs, faith and questions a lot. Is there, does this exist, the devil, God and all of these things about religion?" said Ms. Braga.
Director Mikael Hafstrom intends to scare audiences as he asks the viewers to ponder these questions. He said to do that a director must strike a tone with the film.
"It's not just about, you know, jump scenes and so on. It's about a feeling throughout the film that I think is important to create a good scare," said Mikael Hafstrom
