(REPORTER ASKS: YOU'RE DOING SOME FUNKY MOVES, DO YOU EVER FEEL YOU'RE HAVING TO BE TOO RIDICULOUS FOR YOUR ROLES?) "Do you mean do I worry about my dignity? yes I do, yes I do, and I probably have none left after this film." (REPORTER ASKS: WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE 80s?) " I remember being happy in the 80s which is very odd for me, I was really quite upbeat and full of hope and optimism , I didn't really get gloomy until about 1991, and I had a very nice time. I had a lot of lemon juice in my hair , remember highlights were the big thing and musically, I was as much of a musical moron then as I am now." (REPORTER ASKS: WHAT DID JEMIMA THINK ABOUT YOUR MOVES IN THE VIDEO?) "She's never seen me dance, most of my friends have never seen me dance but she liked it." - Story Text: London's Leicester Square was bursting with fans on Monday (February 5) at the world premiere of Music & Lyrics. Hugh Grant, who plays ageing pop star Alex Fletcher in the film, said he was pleased to have persuaded the studio to give Londoners the first chance of seeing the movie.
"I was very keen on that actually, normally the British premiere comes a bit after the American one but I put my little starry foot down and said for once we're gonna start in England," Grant said.
The actor was joined on the red carpet by girlfriend Jemima Khan and joked she liked his cheesy dance moves in the movie:
"She's never seen me dance, most of my friends have never seen me dance but she liked it," he said.
The film sees Hugh Grant's character Alex Fletcher, a washed up 80s pop star with a second chance at the big time, when he's given the opportunity to write a song for the current day pop diva, (newcomer Haley Bennett). The problem is that, not having had a hit for years, he's a bit rusty at his craft - he's also never been the one to write the lyrics to any of his songs. Enter Drew Barrymore as Sophie, the quirky young woman who waters Fletcher's plants and has a flair for words.
The two begin a collaboration to find all the right notes and words and - naturally - discover something about themselves along the way.
Drew Barrymore, wearing a Galliano dress, was last in London for the Charlie's Angels premiere: "I love Leicester Square, it's the best", she said. Asked about how she felt Grant did on the dancing and singing front, she said: "I love it and it wasn't easy for him to get it up at 7 in the morning, in front of 300 people so I think he had a few cocktails and went full tilt."
There was also a surprise for fans who followed the British reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother, as Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty made her first public appearance. Shetty refused to say whether rumoured plans to work with Hugh Grant were true or not, but she said she was planning on staying in the UK for quite some time as there was "interesting work" there.
