- Story Text: Cast and crew of British film "4.3.2.1" hit the red carpet Tuesday (May 25) evening for the film's world premiere in London.
The action-packed crime-thriller is directed by English filmmaker Noel Clarke, who won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2009.
Clarke - who previously worked on dramas "Kidulthood" and "Adulthood" - also wrote the script and said that it came in response to being told he couldn't write about girls.
"Yeah someone said I couldn't write about girls so I decided to try it and this is the result, so maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong, I don't know, but this is what it ended up being," he said.
The film definitely has a female slant where even the 'bad guy' is a woman.
Actress Michelle Ryan plays this part and talks about the strength of the characters in the film.
"I think the heart of every character is very female and very true to this feminine side. And I think that's what's great with Noel's script, he has, he has made a script that is about strong women, and it's, and the characters are well-developed and they're not just, 'Oh let's give a girl a gun and make her hard' because that just doesn't read, there's no depth to it," she said.
"4.3.2.1" follows 4 young girls who get mixed up in the biggest diamond robbery to date.
American actress Emma Roberts plays Joanne, an American girl now living in London after her mother marries an Englishman.
Roberts talked about what made her work on the film.
"I mean it's definitely different, a departure from everything else I've done before which was what attracted it to me in the first place," she said.
"She definitely goes from passive-aggressive, to a people-pleaser to a complete badass which is cool," Roberts added, in reference to her character.
Briton Tamsin Egerton plays Cassandra, the most well-to-do of the four girls.
Egerton said she enjoyed the challenge of moving from comedy to a more emotional role.
"The fact that she, it's when it starts to go a bit wrong for her that I enjoyed playing her a lot more. I mean she has a bit of a crisis point in New York where she just kind of crumbles. And she's so fragile and she's very alone so it's really quite sad but then she has to, she realises that she has to pick herself up and carry on. And she finds this inner strength and becomes this feisty young woman and it was awesome to play," she said.
Third in the pack is moody Shannon, played by Ophelia Lovibond who was recently in "Nowhere Boy" and "Chatroom" which was just at Cannes.
Lovibond talked about the challenges of playing 'Shaz'.
"Well, she was hard work, cause I mean, as you say she's quite brooding but she was a challenge and I was happy to play her and it was something I wanted to get my teeth into and Noel let me, so it was good," she said.
Last but not the least is Kerrys, an incredibly outspoken character played by British actress Shanika Warren-Markland.
"I had one fight scene so like beating up a guy, which worked with the stunt guys who I think they worked on James Bond's films, so yeah, working with them that was quite funny. And do lots of running in heels, lots of running in high heels and little skirts, so yeah, that's a stunt in itself," she said.
Other members of the cast include Clarke, who plays Tee, the aggressive middleman in the diamond heist.
Clarke also directed the film, along with Damon Bryant.
When asked which direction his career was now going to take, he said:
"I just wanna do things that are different each time. So I don't know if there's a conscious direction that I wanna do this and I wanna do that. What I really wanna do is make films that people wanna see, and hopefully this is the beginning of that."
