- Story Text: Julia Roberts and Clive Owen attend the world premiere of their new comedy caper, 'Duplicity'.
Julia Roberts and Clive Owen trod the red carpet for the world premiere of their latest crime caper, 'Duplicity' in London on Tuesday (March 10).
The film delves into the little known world of competitive intelligence - and counter intelligence - in the private sector. In a corporate jungle, where new products and patents see potentially billions of dollars at stake, espionage is all part of the game.
Owen and Roberts play former government spies, now each working for two different rival companies out to steal each other's secrets in order to establish themselves as market leaders. But with one (or more) of the two pros acting as a double agent, it's not clear whether they're working with or against each other, or who is scamming whom.
It's not long before there are romantic entanglements in the web of lies and deceit and the question arises: can two people who lie and harbour secrets for a living ever trust each other? 'Duplicity' reunites Owen and Roberts on screen for the first time since their 2004 drama, 'Closer'.
Owen said that, despite the difference in roles, it took no time at all to recapture the acting chemistry between them.
"It was very quick. Because no matter how different the films are, we still got on really well on Closer and had a great time and the chemistry was very good in that. So you just start and you hit the ground running. You sort of, you know, you know you like each other, respect each other, trust each other. So straight away just sort of refining the work really," he told Reuters Television.
Roberts was initially less charitable in her assessment of working with Owen.
"He's awful, you know. He's a prima donna, that one," she joked. "Just kidding, just kidding, I love him."
Tony Gilroy, directing his second feature film after the Oscar nominated 'Michael Clayton,' said that despite the fantastic lengths companies go to in the film, the basis for the story is very real.
"There isn't anything in this movie that hasn't happened or isn't happening now. I mean, as silly and extreme as it seems it's all-- I mean if you go online and you Google competitive intelligence or corporate espionage and you dig for about 15 minutes you can sort of find chapter and verse on what we're doing in the movie. I mean it's very real," he said.
