- Story Text: On the final leg of a world tour to promote the new movie "Clash of the Titans," Australian actor Sam Worthington and film director Louis Leterrier took to the red carpet before the Japanese premiere in Tokyo on Thursday (April 8) to defend the film against critics.
The 3D movie has already climbed to the number 1 spot in the U.S. and U.K markets, and is due to be released in Japan later this month. Despite success at the box office, the film has attracted less than positive reviews from critics.
"I don't give a fuck about the critics, to be honest with you. I don't. In regards to what I think, the critics are the fans. The critics are the people that pay their 16 bucks to go see a movie. We are doing quite successful there. And that's all I make movies for. I don't make movies for a stodgy 50-year-old who doesn't care. I make movies for the person like these people here. There you go. And that's the whole thing it comes down to. And if we give them what they want, that's all that they demand," Worthington told Reuters Television at the premiere.
"Clash of the Titans" grossed 44.2 million U.S. dollars from No. 1 openings in all 15 of its foreign markets. The early worldwide total stands at 108.26 million U.S. dollars.
The film is a Hollywood remake of a 1981 feature of the same name. Director Louis Leterrier said this may be partly to blame for bad reviews.
"Now the critics nowadays, when they were children, they saw this movie. I mean, a 36-year-old critic, a 40-year-old critic, saw this movie when they were a child. So it's actually, you know, it's hard to see this movie being remade. I'm the same way. So they have to understand it came from the right place," Leterrier said.
Outside the premiere Leterrier and Worthington signed autographs and talked to Japanese fans. To their surprise, Worthington at one point took a fan's video camera and walked around the red carpet filming the event.
The 3D action film sees sea monsters battling it out with characters from Greek mythology. Worthington plays the heroic Perseus and Ralph Fiennes also stars as the villainous Hades. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
