- Story Text: Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy were in fine spirits Sunday night (January 18, 2009) as they arrived for the Sundance premiere of Carrey's upcoming film, "I love You Philip Morris." It tells the true story of a local policeman, who after being involved in a car accident, turns cons and frauds in an effort to fund his new gay lifestyle. Carrey's character Steve Russell eventuallyup in state prison, where he meets up with the love of his life, a sensitive inmate played by Ewan McGregor.
At the premiere, Carrey laughed off one red carpet comment that called the movie a hybrid of "Brokeback Mountain" and Shawshank Redemption."
"This is nothing like "Brokeback" at all," explained Carrey. "It is not a movie about gayness, I don't think. I think its about love, I think its about compulsion, I think its about proving your worth to the world. You know alot of people go to lengths to prove that."
Carrey told Reuters that his characters complexity is what drew him to the project.
"The thing that I loved about it, when I read it was that was sort of repulsed on one page and really attracted to him on another. I think I figured out why I was really attracted to the character was his relentless about love," said Carrey.
Co-star Ewan McGregor says the film has several layers.
"It was like a series of small love stories or big love stories," added McGregor. "Then the extent that he goes through to be with the one the guy he loves and to try and get out of prison,"
