- Story Text: Actress Kirsten Dunst walked the red carpet and posed for photos ahead of a weekend screening of her new film "Melancholia."
The Sunday (November 6, 2011) night event was part of the AFI Film Festival, underway in Hollywood this week.
Dunst described the unique story told in the film directed by famed Danish director Lars von Trier.
"Well it kind of plays out in two parts," explained 29-year-old. "It's almost a dark comedy in the beginning in a way. It's really about these sisters' relationship, and how they kind of change roles halfway through the film. And, also it's a sci-fi movie. And we have the end of the world coming towards us."
The performance earned Dunst the Best Actress Award at the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival in earlier this year.
Dunst talked about why she enjoyed working with von Trier.
"Working with Lars von Trier and the cast. It's such a special crew and family that Lars puts together that are really supportive. And it was a very encouraging and wonderful set to be on."
German actor Udo Kier also starred in the film. Speaking to reporters before the screening at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, Kier, who has worked with von Trier for 22 years, had high praise for his work behind the camera.
"You use the word 'genius,' Einstein was a genius," noted Kier. "But so I'm very careful with that word genius. But it's definitely in the category of David Lynch, Kronenberg, Gus Van Sant. He is one of the best directors in the world."
Kier, 67, said he also enjoyed working with his co-star, Dunst.
"I've worked with, over the 20 years I've lived here, a lot of stars. And some you like and some you don't. But Kirsten is a wonderful person."
Trier's initial inspiration for making the sci-fi art film came from his dealing with depression and the treatment he received for it through therapy.
The movie was filmed in Sweden.
"Melancholia" has already opened in Europe. It will be released in North America on November 11, 2011. The AFI Film Festival runs through November 10. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
