- Story Text: Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg walked the red carpet for the world premiere in Dubai on Wednesday (December 7), for the premiere of the fourth installment of the "Mission Impossible" franchise.
Two-time Academy Award winner Brad Bird directed the film, and the cast includes Jeremy Renner, nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2008 war film "The Hurt Locker". Other actors in the new film include Simon Pegg and Paula Patton.
Bird won the Oscars for animated films "The Incredibles" (2004) and "Ratatouille" (2007).
He talked about the biggest obstabcles of making a sequel.
"One of the challenges of any sequal particuarliy a third sequal is you have a lot of audience expectation going in but I think you can run stragiht at those expectations and play with them and zig when the audience are expecting you to zag and I think that's what we did in this movie," he said.
Cruise is producing the fourth "Mission Impossible" film with J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk.
Cruise made his screen debut 30 years ago and has since made 34 films and was involved in a producing role in 17. He also earned Oscar nominations for leading roles in "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire". Cruise was nominated for a supporting role in "Magnolia", too.
The "Mission Impossible" series has been a solid bet both at the box office and with critics.
All three installments garnered more than 50 per cent of favourable reviews on aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, with the third scoring 70 per cent of positive reviews.
The movie series "Mission Impossible" first began in 1996 and has attracted both male and female fans to its action-packed story line, with fans lining up hours in advance for to meet for this film as well.
Cruise, 49, returns as super agent Ethan Hunt, saving the world yet again in "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" that is packed with stunts and action scenes, and featuring the world's tallest building, Dubai's 828-metre (2,716 ft) Burj Khalifa.
Pegg joked he and Cruise knew the high calibre of talent they were both working with.
"It was great, I mean it was the mission impossible movie, I was working with the biggest movie star in the world and so was he," Pegg told Reuters Television.
While on set, Cruise sat on top of the building and signed his daughter and wife's names on the top of it.
In the latest in the series of action blockbusters that has grossed over two billion US Dollars worldwide, Impossible Mission Force (IMF) operative Hunt and fellow agents get blamed for a terrorist bombing of the Kremlin and are forced to run.
The agency is dissolved and the group -- without any resources or backup -- must find a way to clear the agency's name, prevent another attack and avert a nuclear war.
Major parts of the film were shot in Dubai, where it officially opens on December 7 while the action also takes Hunt to Moscow, Budapest and Mumbai.
The film will be released in Japan on December 16 and in the US on December 21, with theatrical releases around the world staggered over several weeks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
