- Story Text: Gladiator-stars of the popular "Spartacus" television series walked the red carpet on Wednesday night (January 18) for the epic season two kick off premiere in Los Angeles.
Actress Lucy Lawless, who plays the character Lucretia on the show, believes the strong story line development is the reason behind the success.
"Rich, rich storytelling," explained Lawless. "In the beginning they came for the T& A because they were curious about the notoriety about it, but they stayed for the drama and the rockin' story telling. We are going to continue to take them on the wild roller coaster this season."
On the heels of the bloody escape from the House of Batiatus that concluded "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," the gladiator rebellion continues and begins to strike fear into the heart of the Roman Republic in "Spartacus: Vengeance." Gaius Claudius Glaber and his Roman troops are sent to Capua to crush the growing band of freed slaves that Spartacus leads before it can inflict further damage. Spartacus is presented the choice of satisfying his personal need for vengeance against the man that condemned his wife to slavery and eventual death, or making the larger sacrifices necessary to keep his budding army from breaking apart.
Lawless also took time to mention the loss of actor Andy Whitfield, the former star of the show, who died of lymphoma at the age of 39, in 2011, which forced a delay in the show's production for a season.
"For a while we were not even sure that it would go ahead at all," said a still emotional Lawless. "Andy so valued what it meant to the people that worked on it, he wanted the crew to carry on working, he knew it was a great thing for the fans and he wanted that to continue for the fans whether he could be there or not. We are very sad that he couldn't be here...but that is how it goes. But he passed the baton to Liam."
Actor Liam McIntyre was among the stars attending the premiere and promised that the second season will not disappoint.
"This is wildly different. They are in a whole new situation," said McIntyre. "In season one they are in a pressure cooker environment, they are in tense and tight. Now they are on the run. They are wanted man and Spartacus wants to find out how to lead that group."
"Spartacus" averages over 6 million viewers per episode on the STARZ cable channel, and is an international smash, airing in over 150 countries.
