- Story Text: Global pop star Rihanna and the rest of the cast of "Battleship" attended the film's red carpet premiere in Tokyo, on Tuesday (April 3) despite torrential winds and typhoon gusts that blew across the nation.
The film also stars former Victoria's Secret model, Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch of Disney's "John Carter" and Alexander Skarsgard of the HBO series "True Blood".
Five-time Grammy winner Rihanna plays a daredevil naval officer firing machine-guns in "Battleship", a role she found refreshing as it was a departure from real life.
"I wanted a role that was a huge departure from anything that was my real life, and when I met with (director) Peter Berg he went through this role with me. I was really intrigued because it was really not glamorous at all, it was really physical and it was different. And I thought my fans would appreciate that," the Barbados-born R&B singer said.
While Japanese celebrities were in attendance for the world premiere, a certain British singer-songwriter was also at the event, thanks to a last-minute invite from Rihanna herself.
"I saw Rihanna at the airport and she told me about the premiere. So, that's I guess I was lucky because I didn't know it was going on here. But she's, I'm sure she's going to be amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing her in the movie."
Rihanna, whose acting debut in "Battleship" has garnered a lot of media attention plays a character which she describes as 'bad-ass'.
"I play a pretty bad-ass chick in the film and the whole film is bad-ass. It's really fun and a lot of action and I think you guys are going to love it. So, enjoy," Rihanna told attendees of the premiere.
