- Story Text: Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds have teamed up for the new action thriller "Safe House."
In the movie, Washington plays a former CIA agent who has been placed in a safe house manned by Reynolds' character. After the secret location is raided by rebels, their characters flee the bunker in search of a secure location.
Filmed mainly in Cape Town, South Africa, over the course of five months, the story line of the film had the duo tracking across various locations in South Africa.
In an effort to make the film as realistic as possible, Washington subjected himself to waterboarding, which is a form a torture formerly used by the CIA in order to extract information from prisoners. The practice involved water being poured over someone's face which resulted in the feeling of drowning.
"It's very disorienting and I was relaxed. You imagine in those real situations where it's already tense and you might have already been sleep deprived or blindfolded or whatever. But I knew it was a controlled environment so it wasn't as intense," said Washington.
This dedication and Washington's reputation as an actor is part of what attracted actor Robert Patrick to signing on to the film.
"Beside the script, I mean to have the opportunity to work with Denzel was what I was looking for. Whenever you get to go toe-to-toe with somebody that good, you know, that's what you aspire to do. So he's an incredible actor, I had a wonderful experience working with him," Patrick told Reuters.
In the film, Washington literally goes to new lengths by sporting an afro inspired by a TV personality.
"There is a guy that works for CNN, he's a contributing panelist and he has this great hair, it's like - black guy, and it just looks like a lion's mane, he's got a lot of gray hair. So I took it from that," explained Washington.
A pregnant Molly Sims hit the red carpet with her husband and the film's producer, Scott Stuber. Sims revealed to reporters that Stuber was anxious about the night.
"He's very nervous, tonight his movie. So he's got - he's excited, he put a lot into it. They shot it for five months in South Africa, Daniel Espinosa, he's the director, phenomenal. It's really good, I've seen it like seven times," said Sims, who is expecting the couple's first child this fall.
