But my favorite part honestly - when you write something and you hand it to the actors and they take something that's you've done and they make it even better than you've done. And so it becomes more than just alive, I mean, they put their imprimatur on it and make it better." - Story Text: The "Knife Fight," a sharp, reflective, political satire that dives into the realities of modern American politics, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday (April 25).
Written and directed by two-time Academy Award-winner Bill Guttentag and co-written by revered political consultant Chris Lehane the film features an ensemble cast made up of veterans and newcomers.
Rob Lowe, who starred in the political television drama "The West Wing" for seven years, said this film will provide audiences with a different view of politics.
"'The West Wing' was sort of a romantic government we'd like to have - behind the scenes look. This is the warts and all, sort of more cynical, jaded look at what goes on. And it's written by the actually guys who do this for a living. So if you want to see how a real modern campaign is run, you're going to see it in this movie, and I love that authenticity," Lowe told Reuters.
Another distinction is the humor woven throughout the film.
"It really made me laugh out loud, the script. It's a great character for me, it's one of my favorites that I've done. Great verbal arias for me to do and I always like that," Lowe explained.
Erick McCormack, who coincidentally is currently appearing as a senator on Broadway in "The Best Man," stars in the film as a political figure. McCormack made a quick appearance on the red carpet in between performances.
"It's kind of bizarre because in this film I play the governor of Kentucky and on stage I play the senator from Tennessee. So, it's - I've been pigeon-holed now, I've pigeon-holed myself," said McCormack.
Lowe's assistant in the film, played by Jamie Chung, is starting to see her star rise after her successful appearance in "The Hangover 2," however, she said she is trying not to pay attention to all the hype.
"I feel like the caliber of talent that I'm able to work with now is getting better and better, but I mean, I don't know, I don't really think that the phone is ringing off the hook. But it's honor to be able to do movies like this and keep a healthy balance and do awesome studio movies as well," she said.
Some of the actors rounding out the ensemble are Richard Schiff, Jennifer Morrison, Julie Bowen and Michelle Krusiec.
