It follows a Marine, a guy who's lived a hard life and he's trying to integrate back into the real world, into society. I can only imagine how trivial everything seems after you've been at war. Love could be out of the cards for both of these people, but they fight through and eventually fall in love." - Story Text: Zac Efron talked about falling in love and pumping iron for his role in "The Lucky One" at its Los Angeles premiere on Monday (April 16).
The film, based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, is about a Marine who returns home from a tour of duty in Iraq and searches for a beautiful woman he's never met. The one thing that kept him alive during the war was looking at a photograph he found of her in Iraq's war torn rubble. Sparks is known for writing popular romance novels like "Message in a Bottle," "Dear John" and "The Notebook," the latter of which Efron reportedly calls "perfect."
"I think 'The Notebook' was a perfectly executed movie, but I think this one's different," the 24-year-old actor said. "It follows a Marine, a guy who's lived a hard life and he's trying to integrate back into the real world, into society. I can only imagine how trivial everything seems after you've been at war. Love could be out of the cards for both of these people, but they fight through and eventually fall in love."
Efron trained with a Navy SEAL for five months and gained 17 pounds of muscle for his role.
"It was a challenge, it was great," he said. "It was something I always wondered if I could do. I always wondered if I would be able to physically transform like that and this was my first shot at it. And I pulled it off, I think, in the end."
Taylor Schilling, who plays Efron's love interest, said their love scenes were "surprisingly not awkward."
"We were actually at that point so comfortable with each other and he's such a gentleman, he's so gracious," she said. "He was a true leading man. He really took care of me. I felt very safe."
