- Story Text: Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline and Kasey the dog posed for photographs at the premiere of "Darling Companion" in Los Angeles on Tuesday (April 17).
Kline reportedly didn't get along with Kasey, a collie mix, during filming.
"We patched things up," the 64-year-old actor joked on his repaired relationship with the dog. "We had a little falling out. He's a method actor, and so he knew that my character was rather indifferent towards him, so he thought, 'Okay, two can play this game.' I'm a dog psychologist between jobs."
The film centers on Beth, played by Keaton, who saves a dog she sees on the side of a freeway. She grows extremely close to the animal since she's struggling with an empty nest and a self-involved husband, played by Kline. Her husband loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home. Beth, distraught, gets the wedding guests to help her search for her beloved dog.
"Keaton, I adore, I've always wanted to work with her," director Lawrence Kasdan said. "She's unusual, and she's a real movie star because her personality is so indelible and so singular and she brings it to this movie, she's just really alive."
This is the sixth film that reunites Kline with director Lawrence Kasdan. It rounds out a loose baby-boom trilogy that includes "The Big Chill," and "Grand Canyon."
"Larry, when he did 'The Big Chill,' he's writing about things that he knows, and that's a particular generation," Kline said. "And we're the same generation now. Different characters but the same generation; well off, fortunate, but we have our problems."
