- Story Text: Zac Efron showed up to the European premiere of The Lucky One in London on Monday (April 23, 2012) sporting an injured hand.
But despite arriving at the Bluebird in Chelsea with his left hand wrapped in a bandage, he was keen to down play the situation, telling Reuters ''they put bandages on it to make it look way bigger than it is."
A relief no doubt to the hundreds of fans who braved the rain and waited hours to see their hero.
Efron built a solid fan base when starring in the High School Musical film franchise. However, after years playing schoolboy Troy Bolton since leaving the series in 2008, Efron has chosen more serious roles. In The Lucky One he plays a marine who returns from a tour of duty in Iraq to search for a beautiful woman whose photograph he believes kept him alive. In order to take on the role Efron trained with a Navy SEAL for five months and gained 17 pounds of muscle, a transformation he admitted that was hard work: "It was, I always keep up training to a degree never quite as intense as that, that was a lot, that was every day at 4.30 in the morning, I need to have a real life sometimes."
The film is based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, who is known for writing popular romance novels like Message in a Bottle, Dear John and The Notebook. When asked how he feels about The Lucky One being classed by some as a "chick-flick" he said: "This is a good film, this is a good story you know people would have said the same thing about Casablanca or From Here to Eternity, in the end a good movie is a good movie regardless of what it is, I mean I saw Bridesmaids for instance right total girl flick thought it was great, why because it was well done, this is a really well done film and people are going to love Zac in it, they're going to love Taylor - they do a terrific job."
Actress Taylor Schilling joined Efron on the red carpet. The rising star plays Efron's love interest. She said he was a "true gentleman to work with" but revealed she does not enjoy watching their romantic scenes: "I haven't really watched them, I watch them like this," she said, covering her face with her hands.
Both Efron and Schilling said they would like to come back to London to perform in the West End. Efron said he would like to do Broadway first, while Schilling said of her dream role: "Anything with the right director, anything, I can't wait to come back to London and be on stage."
The pair signed autographs and posed for pictures with delighted fans. Even singer Dionne Bromfield was hoping she would get a chance to meet Efron. The goddaughter of the late singer Amy Winehouse said she has been a fan of Zac's for years and joked about what she would say if she met him: "Marry me please, because you are absolutely beautiful, no, I don't know what I would say to him, because I would be star struck."
Plenty of Efron's supporters were lost for words, 14-year-old Shaine Davies and 15-year-old Ophelia Adanson-Woods from Essex cried after being greeted by him, and then later were amazed when he signed their mobile phones.
