This year has already kicked off with a number of action hero movies, and with director Rupert Sanders' "Snow White and the Huntsman", actresses Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart prove that women can swing a sword and take a beating, too.
The modern adaptation of the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm celebrated its world premiere in London's Leicester Square on Monday (May 14).
Stewart and Theron were joined by many of their co-stars on the carpet, which was transformed into fairy tale like scenery, complete with leaves, trees, mushrooms and black ravens.
Stewart, who wore a floor-length black-lace Marchesa dress at the premiere, plays young Snow White. She had previously described her character as a 'badass' heroine, but as she told Reuters Television she found it important to give a balanced portrayal of her character, who is also a pure good person.
"Action hero girls do stuff that a girl could never do. And even what you see us do in the movie we can do you know I think the strength of a woman we're not built to be strong physically, it's all about being steady and knowing yourself. It's a different thing if you know what I mean. So it's like if you're gonna outsmart someone or be quicker than them that's better than like punching them in the face or something."
Stewart did say that the physical part of her role felt sometimes a bit overwhelming.
"I love challenging myself physically. But I have to say the reason that they hire big burly guys to do these action movies is because it is hard. Like I killed myself -- I was a dead person by the end of it," she joked.
Another physical challenge proved to be Stewart's footwear on the red carpet. Whilst doing her press run the actress decided to opt for something more comfortable and after a short discussion with an assistant, slipped into a pair of trainers before continuing her interviews.
Charlize Theron, meanwhile, didn't seem to mind her shoes, but admitted that she had a moment earlier in the hotel when she wanted to get out of her Dior design.
The actress and mum told about the heartbreaking moment when her adopted baby son Jackson did not recognize his mother who was about to leave for the evening's premiere.
"I was saying good bye to him and he just went 'Who's that?' and then he recognized my voice but he was so confused. That was heartbreaking. I was like 'Take the Dior off! Take the Dior off! I must have my son recognize me," she said.
Theron plays the beautiful but evil witch, Queen Ravenna, in the film, who wants to kill Snow White because she sees her as a threat to her existence. Playing a character who is obsessively vain and working in a business where good looks often appear to be one of the most important assets, the actress said the film's moral was very important.
"I think this a story that is very much a cautionary tale. If we place our value on our self-worth and things that is inevitably gonna happen to us then we're doomed and so yeah I think this is very much a cautionary tale," she said.
While Theron convinces in her role as villain, her co-stars said, as a person she couldn't be more different.
"She's lovely. She was fantastic to work with," British actor Sam Claflin, who plays Prince William in the film, said.
And Stewart said she thought the Oscar-winning actress was "hilarious".
"I think you know I am intimidated by her completely but not in the way that you feel bad about yourself. I think it's really, it pushes you to be better -- I wanna impress her, you know. You know like I love her. I think she is amazing," she said.
New dad and the film's leading man Chris Hemsworth also joined his female co-stars on the red carpet, only days after his wife Elsa Pataky gave birth to their first child.
With someone as high in demand as Hemsworth, the actor said he was glad that he didn't not miss the birth.
"Couldn't be happier. You know it's all as I said I am thankful that it all sort of worked out and I was here for it you know. Cause I have been on various press tours and what have you around the world. -- It's wonderful."
Hemsworth plays the Huntsman in the film, who is ordered by Queen Ravenna to kill Snow White but after getting to know the princess, he decides to team up with her instead.
Director Rupert Sanders' film is already the second adaptation of the fairy tale out this year. Director Tarsem Singh's version "Mirror Mirror", which stars Julia Roberts and Lily Collins has already been released. But Sanders' said he was not too concerned that this could undermine the success of his version.
"It's bigger, it's second. You know they're very different films. I think ours is a massive epic medieval war film and theirs was more comedic. I mean I'm not really in a race or a discussion about the two of them you know ours is a very different film. I think people have seen that in the trailers and that's what's really built the excitement," he said.
Another difference between both films has been the casting of the seven dwarves. Whilst Tarsem Singh used small actors for his film, Sanders' dwarves are actually eight and are acted by regular-sized actors.
"I was insulted. I thought you've gotta be joking. I thought I was gonna play then huntsman", actor Eddie Marsan joked about being cast for the role of dwarf Duir. "The moment they told me it was Ray Winstone and Bob Hoskins who are heroes of mine and one of the reasons I became an actor then I jumped at the chance."
The dwarf cast is completed by Ian McShane (Beith), Johnny Harris (Quert), Bob Hoskins (Muir), Toby Jones (Coll), Brian Gleeson (Gus), Ray Winstone (Gort) and Nick Frost (Nion).
"Snow White and the Huntsman" opens in UK theatres on May 30 and in the United States on June 1.
