Making a movie, there are no bad parts. There's challenges. It was really fun because I got to train for over five hours every day to learn how to sing, hours of dancing for many months and worked with (director) Adam (Shankman) on developing the character. It was a lot of fun." DIEGO BONETA SPEAKING WITH REPORTERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) TOM CRUISE, "ROCK OF AGES" CO-STAR ON WHAT HE'LL BE DOING FOR HIS UPCOMING 50TH BIRTHDAY ON JULY 3, SAYING: "I'm going to be on a movie set; I'll be shooting 'Oblivion.' We're going to be shooting in Iceland on that day and have a party with the crew." TOM CRUISE SPEAKING WITH REPORTERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, "ROCK OF AGES" CO-STAR ON WHY THE '80S WERE GREAT, SAYING: "The music was great. The music stands out and stays. The fashion was a bit crazy. I wouldn't want to repeat some of those shoulder pads and stuff. But it was just an innocent time and a very specific sound that came out of Los Angeles at that time." You're just trying to stay in the moment and then of course, when they call cut, we always just broke out in laughter. It was the craziest. I've never, ever, had a kiss like that on screen, ever in my life." CLOSE-UP OF ALEC BALDWIN (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARY J. BLIGE, "ROCK OF AGES" CO-STAR ON PREPARING FOR THE ROLE, SAYING: "I had to get an acting coach, and then I did some method acting by going to the strip clubs and speaking to the women that oversee the girls and the owners and, you know, really getting into it. It was fun. There was nothing 'hard work' about it. It was too much fun, actually." 17 MARY J. BLIGE SPEAKING WITH REPORTERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) JULIANNE HOUGH, "ROCK OF AGES" STAR ON WORKING WITH TOM CRUISE, SAYING: "He's incredible. Everything that everybody says about him is true. He's the hardest working person, most dedicated and committed, he really transformed. I just wish that Stacee Jaxx was alive today and was real so that I could go and see his concert." CLOSE-UP OF MALIN AKERMAN (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIEGO BONETA, "ROCK OF AGES" CO-STAR, SAYING: "Timeless melodies, the vocal melodies and the instrumental melodies are so epic. I think that's what makes 80s music so special and I hope that this movie brings some of that back to today's pop music." - Story Text: The "Rock of Ages" premiere was met with screaming fans in Los Angeles on Friday (June 8), with stars gearing up to see the rock 'n' roll musical film.
Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta were just a few of the actors on the carpet before the movie's start.
Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, "Rock of Ages" lovingly spoofs the hard rock and metal era of the 1980s. The film follows small town girl Sherrie Christian, played by Hough, who journeys to Los Angeles in search of bigger dreams to become a singer. She meets city boy Drew Boley, played by Boneta, who hooks her up with a waitressing job on the Sunset Strip. They fall in love. Their romance and the characters surrounding them are chronicled by the exuberant soundtrack of Def Leppard, Journey, REO Speedwagon and more.
"The music was great," said 42-year-old Zeta-Jones, reflecting on that time period. "The music stands out and stays. The fashion was a bit crazy. I wouldn't want to repeat some of those shoulder pads and stuff. But it was just an innocent time and a very specific sound that came out of Los Angeles at that time."
Cruise played eye-liner and leather chaps wearing sex and rock god Stacee Jaxx, drawing on the likes of Bret Michaels and Axl Rose.
"It was really fun because I got to train for over five hours every day to learn how to sing," Cruise said. He turns 50 on July 3.
Two-time "Dancing with the Stars" winner, 23-year-old Hough, had nothing but kind words to say about her co-star.
"He's incredible," she said. "Everything that everybody says about him is true. He's the hardest working person, most dedicated and committed, he really transformed. I just wish that Stacee Jaxx was alive today and was real so that I could go and see his concert."
