- Story Text: Life is very good for actor, writer and director Dax Shepard these days...and it shows as the hard-working star arrived on the red carpet Tuesday night (August 14) with his fiance and co-star Kristen Bell for the Los Angeles premiere of the comedy, "Hit and Run."
The film, in which Shepard takes on writing, acting and directing credits, is the story of Charlie Bronson (Shepard), a nice guy with a questionable past who busts out of the witness protection program to drive his fiance(Kristen Bell) from their small home town to Los Angeles so she can land the job of a lifetime. Their road trip grows awkwardly complicated when they are chased by the feds (led by Tom Arnold) and increasingly dangerous, when Charlie's former pals, a band of gangsters (led by Bradley Cooper) enter the fray.
Shepard and Bell told Reuters that they wanted to make a film that pays homage to the old "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, where the actors have as much fun making the film as audiences do watching it.
"First of all, it is the movie that we really wanted to make," explained Bell, as she held the hand of Shepard. "It fell out of Dax's brain and he didn't compromise anything. That, in and of itself, is awesome. He hired all of our friends and we go to spend some time together, there was no downside."
Shepard, the filmmaker, added that he wanted to set a new watermark for having fun on set.
"We wanted to answer the question it possible to have twice as much fun as Burt Reynolds and Sally Field in "Smokey and the Bandit" and it turns out that you can," said Shepard.
Co-star Bradley Cooper was also complementary of the his good friends skills, not only in front of the camera, but behind it as well.
"The onus is on the director to make that energy prevail and I knew right away that Dax would prevail," said Cooper.
"He showed it in bringing the movie in on budget, on time and have all the stunts. He handled it with utter ease. There is a lot of laughs on the set, which is hard to do. It all comes from him."
The film also stars Tom Arnold and Jason Bateman.
