- Story Text: 'The Dark Knight Rises' opened in Japan on Friday (July 27) for a select number of lucky fans who won or bought their tickets ahead of its nation-wide opening to the general public on Saturday (July 28).
What was previously planned to be a red carpet premiere, was significantly toned down following the Denver suburb shootings which killed 12 and wounded 58 more.
Previously one of the most-anticipated films of the year, Warner Bros. cancelled plans for star-studded premieres in Paris, Mexico City and Tokyo.
At the Shinjuku Picadilly theatre, fans of the Batman series queued up to watch the trilogy, 'Batman Begins', 'The Dark Knight' and the final installment, 'The Dark Knight Rises'.
One fan, 22-year-old university student, Ryo Miyasaka said it was blow to hear the news of the Aurora theatre shooting at the midnight screening last Friday (July 20).
"When I first saw what happened I was really shocked. That kind of incident it is a really sad thing, especially as a Batman fan," Miyasaka said.
Wearing a Batman t-shirt to the marathon event, Miaysaka told Reuters he was impressed by star Christian Bale visiting survivors of the shooting in hospital.
"Christian Bale, he is really an amazing person for going to the hospital and personally visiting those affected," he said.
"I am really sorry to hear that news. For me it is really unbelievable the influence that movies could have, I couldn't believe it could happen from this Batman movie," said 17-year-old high school student Takuto Asada.
Warner Bros said on Monday (July 23) "The Dark Knight Rises" took in $160.8 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices over the weekend, which is lower than industry estimates for the debut that felt the impact of last week's movie theatre massacre in Colorado. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
