- Story Text: Shia LaBeouf joined castmate Guy Pearce on the red carpet Wednesday night (August 22) for the Los Angeles premiere of "Lawless," a period action drama based in the Prohibition-era.
Directed by John Hillcoat and written by Nick Cave, "Lawless" is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant's family in his novel "The Wettest County in the World," the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation's most notorious crime wave.
LeBeouf, who plays brother Jack Bondurant in the film, told Reuters that he was intrigued by the different layers each character in the movie brings.
"Good guys that are only good are not interesting, bad guys who are only bad are not interesting," explained LeBeouf. "I think human beings are abstract, and I think John Hillcoat and Nick Cave's script reflected that. People have layers."
The "Transformers" star added that he also jumped at the chance to work with a cast, that beside Pearce, also included Tom hardy, Gary Oldman and Jessica Chastain."
"For me it is the real life "Avengers," said LeBeouf.
"We are surrounded by real life super heroes, they all have their own magic power. It was really cool and a wonderful opportunity."
Guy Pearce, who plays special agent Charlie Rakes in the film, appreciated the attention that was paid to the film's authenticity.
"There are differences the way people dress, the language people use, the things that are appropriate, now that were not appropriate then. Particular behaviors," explained Pearce. "That is always fascinating when you do a period film."
