- Story Text: Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts were seen on the red carpet ahead of AFI Fest's "Rust and Bone" premiere in Los Angeles on Monday (November 5).
The film begins with a wayward Alain (Schoenaerts) caring for his son by stealing, scavenging for food and taking odd jobs. His son's mother is out of the picture.
"He's not a malicious type of guy," said Schoenaerts on his character. "He's kind of an upbeat guy, but has been hit by life too many times. He's kind of emotionally handicapped, He tries to do good but fails time after time."
Alain meets Stephanie (Cotillard as an orca trainer), whose own life is forever changed when she loses her legs in a freak accident during one of the live shows. Stephanie had rejected Alain's advances before she was an amputee, but because her world has been shattered she reaches out to him.
"There was nothing really hard about it except thinking about what it feels like," said Cotillard, on playing an amputee. "People who live the dramatic experience get so much strength out of it that they're kind of heroes to me."
Their relationship is a complicated one. He wants to be a casual lover and friend while she needs something deeper. What drives the wedge of their separateness is their mutual fear. As Stephanie learns to pull herself out of misery and live her life as normally as possible, Alain sinks deeper and deeper into trouble.
"Without what happens in their lives, without everything they go through, they probably wouldn't look at each other the way they finally look at each other," said 37-year-old Cotillard.
