- Story Text: Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper team up again for the new film "Silver Linings Playbook."
The movie, which is part love story, drama and a little comedy, stars Cooper as Pat Solitano, a man working to reclaim his life after an eight month stint in a state institution. In the film Solitano is living with his parents, played by De Niro and Jacki Weaver. Cooper said De Niro and his character were closer to who they are in real life.
"I got to play his son and we got to have much more heated scenes physically and comically. We just had more to chew on in this movie," he said.
As Solitano regains his footing in the real world, he meets a widow named Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Their relationship along with comedian Chris Tucker's character, who plays a friend of Solitano, brings unexpected comedic relief.
"We never saw it as a comedy. Any sort of authentic story in my life that I can remember comedic moments have happen. So the comedy was sort of born out of playing it for real and if you have all these characters that are a little bit more extreme, a little bit outside the box going through some issues, there is going to be some comedy," said Cooper.
"My character definitely has some comedy to it because he plays it real, but my character just shows up out of nowhere, my character is real positive, he knows the legal - the law pretty well, so he is just kind of a funny character, not trying to be funny, but comedy comes out of the situation," Tucker told Reuters.
On the red carpet, De Niro had his own explanation for the movie.
"It shows how difficult it is when the family situation and one of the family members is having issues and problems because then it becomes not just their problem, but the family's problem," he said.
Weaver, best known as a stage actress, said she jumped at the chance to play De Niro's wife in the film.
"It was wonderful. I've idolized him for years and to be able to work with him was such a privilege," said Weaver.
One of the other things providing humor in the film was the families love and football and their wacky superstitions. Both Cooper and Weaver revealed their supernatural beliefs.
"Today, like I saw 11:11 on my watch today, so it's going to be a good day," said Cooper.
"I don't say this Scottish word in the theater, I work in the theater a lot. They say it's bad luck - see I'm not going to say it, that Scottish play by Shakespeare. You shouldn't say it in the theater because it's bad luck. You think I'm insane? You wouldn't be wrong," Weaver said, refering to a theatrical superstition that it is bad luck to mention the Shakespeare play Macbeth inside a theater.
