- Story Text: A new comedy starring Meg Ryan had its premiere in Los Angeles on Monday (May 12).
"Addicted To Love", also starring Kelly Preston, Matthew Broderick and Tcheky Karyo, is the story of Maggie (played by Ryan) - a recently jilted New York artist who has her newly-broken heart set on revenge.
Speaking before the premiere, Ryan described the character she played as "demented". "She has abandoned any idea that she should be responsible for her actions, a true psychotic. She's kind of having a manic episode anyway." Tcheky Karyo plays Anton - Maggie's ex-fiance. He said Ryan's character in the movie is driven by revenge. "She is a woman with a mission. She just wants to erase him, have him dissapear." By the end of the movie, Karyo said, audiences would sympathise with his character. "He goes through a redemption which makes him look human and we can identify with him." "It's not you average romantic comedy," Kelly Preston said.
"It's a little off-beat and dark and avant garde, and hopefully people will enjoy it for that." "And, it's also very funny," she added.
In the film, while spying on Anton and his new girlfriend Linda (Kelly Preston), Maggie literally runs into Sam (Matthew Broderick) who is also spying on Anton and Linda, his ex-girlfriend who he desperately wants back.
Maggie and Sam decide to join efforts to break the couple up.
The film's director Griffin Dunne said the plot wasn't spoilt by the movie poster which indicates that Ryan and Broderick end up together at the end. "It says it on the poster, Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick, so you're going to think, 'gee, they're going to fall in love,' but the journey there is unpredictable," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
