- Story Text: Paris Hilton describes her first major movie role
in the horror film 'House of Wax' as sexy, gory and cool.
"I was just excited because if you do a horror film,
you want to do a death scene, and the way I went out was
pretty cool," said Hilton.
Joined on the red carpet by her co-stars and family
members Hilton said she was proud of finished product and
felt comfortable stripping down to her underwear on the big
screen.
"I think it's a really hot scene. It's definitely
worth the money to just go see that part," she laughs. "And
I think the guys will like it too."
House of Wax sees six friends set out on a road trip
to attend one of the biggest college football games of the
year. But what begins as a mini-vacation for this
fun-loving group suddenly takes a horrific turn. And, the
co-eds are thrust into a living nightmare in which they are
faced with fighting for their very survival.
The plot weaves together the grisly tale of what
happens to Carly (played by Elisha Cuthbert), Paige (played
by Paris Hilton) and their friends when they decide to take
a detour on the way to their final destination and camp out
for the night near a small town. It all starts with a
strange confrontation with a mysterious trucker that leaves
everyone unsettled. Adding to the tension is a clash of
male egos: Carly tries to keep the peace between her
hot-tempered brother Nick (played by Chad Michael Murray)
and her boyfriend Wade (played by Jared Padalecki).
Padalecki says he enjoyed spending time on location in
Australia, but says he definitely earned his paycheck with
his physically demanding role.
"It was a long gruelling experience and you kind of,
you work so hard doing in it that you don't get a chance to
see like 'Hey this would be cool when it's finished,' but finally when
you see it, it looks great, so it shows you
that everybody behind the camera did a terrific job."
As the story continues, the co-eds wake up the next
morning to discover that their car may have been
deliberately tampered with. And, at the risk of being
stranded, they accept a local's invitation for a ride into
Ambrose, the only town around for miles and miles. Once
there, they are drawn to Ambrose's main attraction -
Trudy's House of Wax, which is filled with remarkably
life-like sculptures. But as they soon discover, there is a
shocking reason the exhibits look so real. And then the
friends start disappearing.
Meanwhile, Elisha Cuthbert says she and Hilton
instantly became real-life friends when they met. But she
says she was completely amazed at the attention lavished
upon Hilton, and the star power her blonde co-star has
acquired in the land down under.
"It was madness. I couldn't get over it. It was like
Mickey Mouse. I was like everybody knew who she was. Of
course I know she's a socialite in her own right, and has a
lot of people that are around her. But the reaction in
Australia was mind-boggling."
And, co-star Chad Michael Murray says he also really
enjoyed getting to know the star of the popular television
series, "The Simple Life."
"Paris, you know, everyone carries a stereotype
around, and I don't believe in stereotypes, I don't like to
listen to them, I want to kind of judge it for myself, and
I am glad I did, because she came in and she impressed
everybody. She was nice, she never complained, and she just
showed up and did it."
Producer Joel Silver says the "House of Wax" puts a
modern spin on the slasher movies of the 1970s and 80s,
calling it a "rollercoaster ride that taps into our most
primal fears of being hunted down and trapped." The movie
draws its name from the 1953 horror classic starring
Vincent Price as a talented sculptor who curates a wax
museum featuring eerily lifelike displays.
Twenty tons of wax had to be used to create the
elaborate movie sets, which were constructed with
traditional building materials and then coated with a
spray-on wax faade. Using mostly beeswax, thirty-five
artists created the "bodies" necessary to populate the
town. Working 12-hour days for seven months, the team of
sculptors, mold-makers, painters, and hair technicians
created more than one hundred intricately detailed wax
figures for the film.
All of the figures used in the film are reproductions
of actual living people who were selected to play extras in
the film. Casts were then taken of their heads, hands and
bodies, from which fiberglass molds and silicone casts were
made. From body casting to clothing the finished products,
the process took approximately three to four weeks to
complete each individual figure.
To create additional "dead wax people" for crowd
scenes background actors were fitted with silicone masks
complete with fake eyes, wigs and colour-matched
hand-coverings, and then seated them among the wax figures.
The end result is a spectacular display of special
effects, the old-fashioned way. The filmmakers hope will
deliver a frightening package to all who crave horror
films, including the stars of the film like Paris Hilton.
"I love scary movies, I always have, my whole life,
they're fun to watch, it's fun to get scared and scream and
not be able to sleep at night. The nightmares are
sometimes bad, but it's cool to experience that just by
watching the movie." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
