Summary:West German Chancellor Willy Brandt suddenly resigned office in April after it was discovered that one of his top confidential advisors was a self-confessed East German spy. Given a standing ovation when he appeared in the West German Parliament the day after he had resigned, Brandt declared that he took full responsibility for the security lapse which allowed the East German Gunther Guillaume to become one of his aides.
