- Story Text: INTRO: Pop singer Madonna has arrived in Italy ready for the premiere there of her much-lauded film "Evita".
Italian cinema fans turned out to welcome pop singer and actress Madonna in Rome on Friday (December 20) -- despite being in mourning for Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni who died on Thursday.
Madonna, who arrived at Rome's Ciampino airport at 1700gmt will attend the premiere of the musical "Evita" later tonight.
The star, who arrived with 24 suitcases, left the airport and entered her car carrying her young baby in her arms.
Madonna, 38, gave birth in October to a daughter, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon.
The father, Carlos Leon, is the star's personal trainer.
"Evita" follows the rise and fall of one of Latin America's most famous and influential women, Eva Duarte Peron -- the wife of former populist Argentinian dictator and president Juan Peron.
As first lady of Argentina from 1946 until 1952, Eva Peron became loved by labour unions and the peasant class for her philanthropic deeds. She was reviled, however, by the middle and upper classes and the military establishment.
Director Alan Parker, co-star Antonio Banderas and Madonna are expected to give a news conference on Saturday about the film.
