Summary:Geneva on May 31 1974 saw a notable feat of diplomacy, when the UN officially persuaded Syria and Israel to agree on a ceasefire and disengagement of forces on the Golan Heights. The two sides sat 10 metres apart during the final ceremony, and refused to acknowledge each other, either by salutes or handshakes. Among the provisions of the agreement was an early exchange of prisoners between the two sides.
