Summary:For the first time in years, British, US and French warships and aircraft entered the Suez canal, closed ever since the Arab- Israeli war of June, 1967, to begin the gigantic task of sweeping it clear of mines and underwater obstacles. The canal had been the no-man's land dividing Egyptian and Israeli forces but after the withdrawal of troops early this year, agreement was reached to allow naval experts to clear the canal as a prelude to re-opening.
