- Story Text: Arab League Secretary General, Mahmoud Riad, had talks in Damascus on Thursday (8 July) with Syrian President Hafiz al-Assad and Syrian Deputy Defence Minister, General Naji Jamil, the commander of the Syrian forces in Lebanon on the Lebanese crisis.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Riad's meeting with President al-Assad and General Jamil, followed a week of his shutting between Damascus and Beirut in a bid to solve the crisis. Mr. Riad heads the Arab League initiative trying to find a peaceful solution to the Lebanese crisis. No statement on his talks with the Syrian President was issued. However, Mr. Riad said later in Cairo - where he returned later that day - that there was still no sign of an end to the conflict. Syria has agreed to start withdrawing troops from Lebanon, but has been accused by the Palestinian-Lebanese leftist alliance of failing to carry out that pledge.
