- Story Text: British riot police, watched by U.K. Defence
Secretary Geoff Hoon, share their skills with Chinese
police ahead of UN peacekeeping in Haiti.
Shots fired on a UN vehicle and Chinese riot
police move into action. This is not real but it could
be.
Chinese riot police are being put through their paces
ahead of deployment on a UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti
with a little bit of help from the British police.
The United Kingdom has sent out a four-member police
team to help hone the skills of the squad as it prepares to
head for Haiti.
Firearms training, crowd control, and a variety of
other techniques are on the agenda.
Tony Kalli, Inspector with London's Metropolitan Police
said, "We are mainly talking about anti-ambush drills at
the present time. We are talking about how to deal with
protection issues, as hopefully they will be protecting
some UN officials over there. Then obviously that aspect of
it is quite important. And we are just giving them some
ideas, looking at their tactics and fine-tuning them
really."
On Thursday British Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon was on
hand to see the training himself.
"It is important that we are able to use our forces in
this way, and co-operate with a vitally important country
like China, because these tasks will only increase in
number. And the more people we have available to help, the
better," said Hoon.
An advance team 30-strong left China on September 12,
with the remaining 95 police troops heading to Haiti next
week.
"First, I feel very honoured and it is my great honour
to be selected as a UN peacekeeper to Haiti to perform my
duty as UN police," said police officer Shi Hao.
"It is a totally different situation there but we are
full of confidence that we can do our job well there. And
actually I feel very proud of becoming a UN peacekeeper,
and contributing myself to world peace and stability," said
riot police officer Wang XuZhou (pron: wahng hsoo djoh).
China has taken part in U.N. peacekeeping operations
since 2000, but this is the first time it has sent riot
police.
The squad was selected from cities across China.
