- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell played down the
possibility of holding last-ditch talks with Iraq in
Switzerland, saying the Swiss had made no formal offer to host
them.
Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey met
Powell on Saturday (January 25) and a Foreign Ministry
spokesman said she had offered neutral Swiss soil for a
last-ditch meeting between the United States and Iraq to avert
war.
Powell said however the Swiss had made no formal offer:
"The foreign minister just made a reference to the fact that
such talks have been held here in the past, and that was the
extent of the reference, but no talks are planned."
He added: "She made a gracious passing reference to the
fact that talks have been held here previously and that was
the extent of the comment. I thanked her for her offer."
The United States has threatened to attack Iraq -- with or
without United Nations backing -- if Baghdad fails to give up
its alleged weapons of mass destruction.
