- Story Text: United States Deputy Secretary of State Richard
Armitage has visited Kabul on the second leg of an Asian tour
to stress that events in Iraq will not distract Washington
from its responsibilities in Afghanistan.
United States (U.S.) Deputy Secretary of State
Richard Armitage met with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai
on Friday (May 9, 2003) to stress to the war-torn nation that it
will not be forgotten despite events in Iraq.
Armitage said Washington did not support an appeal by
United Nations (U.N.) special representative to Afghanistan
Lakhdar Brahimi for international peacekeepers to be deployed
outside Kabul.
But, in response to a question, he said U.S. combat troops
would not leave the country until the Afghan government and
its people felt secure.
"We'll withdraw forces once we are sure that the
government of Afghanistan feels perfectly secure, the people
of Afghanistan have found necessary stability, whether we
begin to withdraw at any one date or another is a question our
military forces will put forward to our political leadership
but there is no set date for anything , as far as I know, yet,"
he told media at a news conference held at the Kabul Museum.
He added that President George W. Bush had asked him to
come to Afghanistan, following a visit by United States
Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, to make the point that
the United States would not forget its responsibilities.
"We are able to do two things at the same time," he told a
brief news conference held in the shattered remains of
Afghanistan's National Museum.
Armitage handed over a cheque to the Afghan government for
100,000 U.S. dollars to support the refurbishment of the
museum, virtually bare after most of its contents were
destroyed under Taiban rule.
