The mandate of the U.N.'s disengagement force in the Golan heights expires next Sunday, and both Dr. Waldheim and President Sadat are keen to see it extended. However, according to Dr. Waldheim there are still differences between the Syrians and the Israelis that must be settled before the mandate can be extended. He told a news conference he would return to Damascus on Thursday to renew talks with Syrian leader Hafez Al-Assad. - Story Text: United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim flew into Cairo on Tuesday (25 November) to inform Egyptian President Anwar Sadat of the latest developments in the efforts to persuade Israel and Syria to keep a U.N. force between their front lines in the Golan Heights.
Dr. Waldheim has met both Syrian and Israeli leaders since beginning a new Middle East tour last Saturday. he will return to Damascus for more talks on Thursday (27 November) .. sandwiching a visit to strife-torn Lebanon in between his Israeli-Syrian shuttle.
After meeting with President Sadat, the U.N. chief told a news conference that there were still differences to be settled before a solution to the Golan Heights problem could be achieved.
The U.N. is trying to extend the mandate of its disengagement observation force in the Golan Heights. The mandate is due to expire next Sunday (30 November).
Dr. Waldheim has received support from President Sadat in his efforts to achieve this goal.
He said he believes the Egyptian leader wishes to "maintain the momentum in a search for peace".
