Prince Joachim of Denmark and wife Princess Marie visited the Berlin Wall memorial site during an official trip to Germany on Friday (June 27).
Joachim and Marie visited the former so called "death strip"
in the German capital's Bernauer Strasse street, scene of dramatic events on August 13, 1961 when East German authorities sealed off East Berlin over night.
Residents in Bernauer Strasse at the time jumped out of windows and onto West Berlin territory while East German border guards below their windows were busy putting up barbed wire and sealing front doors to prevent them from fleeing to the West.
Several people jumped to death.
Joachim and French-born Marie were married on May 24, 2008.
The former Marie Agathe Odile Cavallier was born in Paris and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marymount Manhattan College in New York, according to the Danish Royal familiy's Internet site.
Marie worked in advertising in New York and for ING Numismatic Group in Geneva, Switzerland before getting married to Prince Joachim. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
