In August 1974, the plane was making practice runs over the California desert for a transatlantic flight during which it broke the existing record. The aircraft was made entirely of titanium, many times stronger than steel and about 100 times more costly, to enable it to endure the heat generated at 3 times the speed of s sound at heights of around 80,000 feet.
