Summary:In Mozambique, after the Lisbon government had agreed to hand over power to the black population and the Frelimo liberation movement many Portuguese settlers resisted. To prevent this Frelimo troops moved into the capital, Lourenco Marques, on joint peacekeeping duty with Portuguese troops against whom they had been fighting for years. Thousands of white Portuguese headed for the airports, away from their homes, to return to a homeland they hardly knew. NOTE: Date is approximate.
