To prevent this Frelimo troops moved into the capital, Lourenco Marques, on joint peacekeeping duty with Portuguese troops against whom they had been fighting for years. Thousands of white Portuguese headed for the airports, away from their homes, to return to a homeland they hardly knew. NOTE: Date is approximate.
