- Story Text: Thousands of screaming German fans a performance of their visiting pop idol Michael Jackson relayed live on two large outdoor screens on Saturday (November 4).
Jackson arrived in Cologne on Friday (November 3) in a private jet and a white mask to appear on a German celebrity game show in his first television performance outside the United States.
As his cavalcade drove out of Cologne airport, Jackson stood up through the sunroof of his luxury mini-van and threw flowers to dozens of screaming and, in some cases, hysterical fans.
Jackson performed the world premiere of his latest single "Earth Song", due to be released Monday (November 6), live on German ZDF television in a venue in the western city of Duisburg.
About 10,000 fans, who did not manage to get tickets for the United States superstar's appearance on a German game show 'Wetten, dass?' ("Wanna bet?") gathered outside to watch his first European television appearance, ZDF television said.
The show presented by star host Thomas Gottschalk attracts on average 13.65 million viewers in Germany a week.
It also featured British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and other celebrities, who had to guess if contestants could actually perform bizarre stunts they claim to master. Jackson did not join Gottschalk's couch guests.
The singer, who witnesses say was not accompanied on arrival in Germany by his wife Lisa Marie Presley-Jackson, visited the "Phantasialand" theme park on Sunday (November 5) with a group of children and bodyguards.
The theme park was not open to the general public but groups of fans were allowed to watch the singer at play from behind roped barricades.
For one young fan the experience was just too overwhelming and she was led away from the park in tears.
Bild newspaper said Jackson had ordered an armoured Mercedes limousine, a luxury bus, a 50-man support crew, a police escort and copious supplies of mineral water, diet cola and sushi for his stay.
Jackson may stay in Europe until November 27 for the European MTV awards in Paris, Sony said. But the record company declined to give more details about the star's itinerary. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
