- Story Text: - INTRO: Italy's Gianni Versace borrowed from Britain for inspiration for his latest Istante womenswear collection on Tuesday, looking to streetwise London to take the cloying element out of faintly frilly designs. Design house Byblos provided a bright and bubbly contrast with a collection of fluorescent lime greens, fuchsia and orange in slip dresses, tailored jackets and close-fitting minis.
Salvatore Ferragamo launched soft and lengthened silhouettes and the accent was on lightness and transparency on Tuesday (October 1) in the Italian fashion week.
The feminine essence of a woman was evoked in his golden lace and transparent georgette blouses spilling out of severe trouser suits in stretch wool.
Coats and jackets were in light, reversible fabric with one single hook fastening in gilt metal and summery long linen-knit dresses were trimmed and belted in linen gros-grain. The suits were in wool and silk jersey with a piquet effect and the long and skinny skirts were had surprising unexpected slits up the back.
Ferragamo showed sandal dresses in irridescent knits with laced-up necklines. Knitwear was a feature of the slinky navy and champagne-coloured knee-length evening dresses and the fluid tunics worn over mathing pants and knotted with golden belts.
Ferragamo played with texture and colour by using contrasting shiny and opaque finishes of the champagne coloured dinner jackets in double cady. He superimposed layers of the lightest and most transparent viscose knitwear and contrasted lighter with heavier fabric in his heavy jersey suits.
Colours were taken straight from the flower garden with pollen, honey, hemp used almost always alone or in contrast to liquorice brown, or lit up by flaming orange and cerise red.
The House of Salvatore Ferragamo made his name as a footwear and handbag designer so it was only fitting that his shoes made an equally important fashion statement.
The sandal was everywhere with both the highest of heels and complete flatties. The foot was almost always free and gently held in place by a fine network of thin laces. He transformed his trademark VARA shoe with its traditional cross-grain bow into a very light Capri sandal.
Bags were long, horizontal, small and geometric in design in highly polished calf-skin in the strongest reds, acid greens and Ferragamo really went to town with his transparent plastic bags fringed in natural raffia or lined with Vienna straw.
House Byblos provided a bright and bubbly contrast with a collection of fluorescent lime greens, fuchsia and orange in slip dresses, tailored jackets and close-fitting minis.
For sophisticated daywear, Byblos paraded wide-legged "pyjama pants" and broad-shouldered trouser suits in cream and black pinstripes, shaped at the waist and set off by outsized flowers at the lapel.
Models wore black off-the-shoulder mini and long sheathes trimmed at low necklines with black feathers, filmy apricot or coral slips with lacy, scallopped hems and red tights as well as outfits with a hotter toned orange, green and red flower print.
Glamour designer Gianni Versace presented his second line Istante later on Tuesday while Wednesday sees design duo Dolce & Gabbana and stylist Krizia unveiling their latest collections.
Thursday and Friday bring fashion house Gucci and designer Gianfranco Ferre, and Versace presents his main collection on Saturday with Giorgio Armani closing the shows with his top line Giorgio Armani label on Sunday.
