- Story Text: U.S. military mother Cindy Sheehan, who has become the focus of the anti-war movement following the death of her son in Iraq, was arrested on Monday (September 26) in a sit-in at the White House after refusing to obey police orders to leave.
Sheehan joined hundreds of others in a noisy protest calling on U.S. President Bush to pull American troops out of Iraq. Several dozen of the coalition of demonstrators, ranging from Vietnam vets, military families, religious leaders and peace activists deliberately got themselves arrested for civil disobedience by refusing to move from the gates of the White House.
Hundreds more rallied in Lafayette Park, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the executive mansion, shouting for Bush to resign and bring U.S. soldiers home.
Sheehan's son Casey was killed in combat in Iraq. She became the face of the anti-war movement after camping outside President Bush's Texas ranch to protest the U.S-led invasion of Iraq. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
