The new acting mayor of the Manila township of Sanjuan Reynaldo San Pascual, appointed by Philippines President Cory Aquino, took office on April 15 amid major demonstrations against his and other similar Aquino appointments. He was one of many awarded a civic post after Mrs Aquino sacked hundreds of Marcos mayors and provincial governors when she took office in February.Sanjuan's new mayor took over from the dismissed office-holder joseph Estrada after violent demonstrations on April 14 which prevented him entering his office in the town hall.Police said they opened fire on stone-throwing supporters of the former mayor during street battles on April 14 and two people were reportedly wounded by their bullets.Witnesses said demonstrators started throwing missiles when a policeman fired into the air.The police then opened fire on the demonstrators. On april 15 the new mayor had to be escorted into his office by a riot squad.Mayor pascual was celebrating his birthday amidst the turmoil, and was greeted by some enthusiastic pro-Aquino supporters who san "Happy Birthday' to him.But pro-Marcos demonstrations have continued throughout the township against the new appointment, with about 3,000 Marcos supporters shouting slogans condemning the United States and burning the U.S.flag.Later they began harassing motorists as they passed the U.S.Embassy compound.
