Yes, I favour that." Initials Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved

The new United States (US) Defence Secretary Frank Carlucci took up office at the Pentagon on November 24. At a welcoming ceremony at the defence headquarters, Carlucci promised continued strong support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) despite planned military spending cuts by the US. Making reference to President Reagan's recent announcement of cuts in military spending to help reduce the deficit, Carlucci joked that he was probably the only Secretary of Defence to have been confirmed and lost 52 billion US dollars (31 billion pounds sterling) out of his budget on the same day. Carlucci, 57, said he would go to NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss improvements in conventional weapons, particularly in the wake of reductions in intermediate-range nuclear forces. He also said he favoured deploying the strategic defence initiative (Star Wars) as soon as it was feasible.
