- Story Text: Several hundred officers of the former Saigon Government's army have been allowed to return to their families by the present authorities after completing re-education courses.
A ceremony watched by thousands of relatives was held in the Thuc Duc district, nine miles North-west of Saigon, to mark the successful completion of the courses by the officers who ranked from 2nd Lieutenants to Majors.
About 30 local and foreign journalists and photographers were invited to cover the ceremony.
Major Dat Cuong, a political Commissioner who presided over the ceremony, said those who had completed the re-education courses would have to attend further courses if they were subsequently involved in criminal activities or if they acted against the revolution.
Since the fall of Saigon last April, all soldiers and officers of the former government's army have been required to register and enrol in re-education courses.
Some of them, including former Defence Minister General Nguyen ??? Hy, have been allowed to return home. But this was the first ??? that so many officers were allowed to re-join their families at an official ceremony with extensive news coverage.
