- Story Text: Ghana's returning officers this week received their writs of election empowering them to organise the August 29 elections which will return the country to civilian rule after three and a half years of military government. Last Wednesday (9 July), Mr. Justice Charles Crabbe, the Interim Electoral Commissioner, presented the writs to returning officers in greater Accra constituencies. The ceremony took place in the Office of the Electoral Commission. Elsewhere in Ghana, Regional Chief Executives presented the writs on behalf of the Commissioner
Speaking to the returning officers, Mr. Justice Crabbe said the forthcoming general elections are a national exercise involving every Ghanaian, and appealed to the officers to do their best to ensure the success of the elections.
The Commissioner announced that the returning officers whose constituency produces the country's future Prime Minister will have his writ of election framed and preserved in the National Archive.
Formal notices announcing the elections were posted throughout Ghana on Wednesday.
Many voters reportedly already see the election as s contest between two personalities: Dr. Kofi Busia, who heads the Progress Party, and Mr Komla Gbedemah, head of the National Alliance of Liberals. Mr. Gbedemah was Finance Minister under former Ghanaian chief of state, Kwame Nkrumah.
