- Story Text: A powerful bomb -- apparently planted in protest against death sentences passed on left-wingers in Spain -- exploded in the main sales office of the Spanish Airline Iberia in Rome on Thursday (18 September) night.
No one was injured in the blast, which came shortly after 0200 hours, but the office was devastated.
Police said first investigations had shown that the bomb was placed by two youths who were seen driving up on a motor scooter with a covered number plate. They placed the bomb between the iron grill shutters of the office and the windows. The blast hurled pieces of metal more than a hundred yards (metres) and a car parked nearby was badly damaged.
Special police officers joined other investigators at the scene and regular police immediately stepped up the guard on other Spanish concerns in Rome.
The death sentences passed on five young leftist militants in Madrid -- two of them young women said to be pregnant -- have aroused strong emotions n left-wing circles in Italy.
A group calling itself "Internationalist Revolutionary Solidarity" claimed responsibility for a bomb which wrecked the Iberia Airline office in Lisbon, Portugal, last week. They were believed to be protesting about death sentences passed on Basques by General Franco's right wing Spanish government.
