- Story Text: The first class of female foot-patrol officers at Beijing Police Academy graduated in the Chinese capital on Wednesday (August 16) in time for Beijing's hosting of a global gathering of women.
The 66 graduating female cadets showed off their precision drills of martial arts and night-stick handling skills.
The Academy says the cadets have undergone nearly a year of training identical to that given their male counterparts.
Twenty-two-year-old squad leader Liu Lin, whose fighting prowess has earned her roles in kung-fu movies and leadership of a police martial arts squad, says that women are sometimes better than men at handling some situations encountered by patrol police.
"Being a police officer and representative of women, I first of all want to do a good job of security at the women's conference and also to contribute to law and order in the society of the Chinese capital Beijing," she said.
Some tears flowed as the cadets packed away their belongings for their imminent transfer to their first assignments in police posts around Beijing -- which for many will be the United Nations women's conference.
