Summary:May 30 1975, on the border between Mexico and Guatemala, saw the end of thirty years of planning and often-interrupted work on a bridge across the Suchiate River. The new link between the nations was officially opened by Mexico's President Echeverria and Guatemala's President Kjell Laugerud. Engineers had worked for three decades to erect the 400-metre bridge, which had to be founded on shifting, sandy soil.
