Summary:President Juan Velasco Alverado of Peru addresses his people - but for the last time. On August 30 1975, his country erupted in a blaze of civil unrest and he was deposed. His successor was General Francisco Morales Bermudez Cerruti, who came to power when the army withdrew support for Alverado. President Morales included several civilians in his cabinet, a novelty for Peru, which has been ruled by the military since 1968.
