Many of the spectators attending the afternoon ceremonial opening of the Festival were disappointed that the last moment, Nigeria's new Head of State, Brigadier Murtala Mohammed, and unable to attend. His place was taken by the Nigerian Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Brigadier Olufemi Olutoye.
The opening ceremony included gymnastic displays by Armed Forces teams and schoolchildren. Following the displays, the flags of the two countries were hoisted and a runner lit the Festival Flame overlooking the stadium.
The highlight of the ceremonies was a soccer match between student teams from the two countries -- the Ghana Academicals and the Nigeria Academicals. Unfortunately the match ended in a nil-nil draw.
